RACCOONS

The raccoon is a feisty creature that has been known to cause many headaches.  They eat just about anything they can get their big paws on.  This includes the cat food you may leave out on the back patio, the leftovers you may not have secured in the garbage can outside, and the seeds that birds drop to the ground at the bird feeder.  They also enjoy the fruits of the trees you may enjoy when in season.  Many raccoon problems can be solved simply by eliminating these feeding situations.  Bring your cat and dog food in at night, clean up fallen fruit, secure your trash can lids and try to keep bird feeders as clean as possible.

Sometimes, however, the raccoons might decide to move into your house.  They take swift advantage of weak screens on foundation vents as well as existing holes in your roof.  Chimneys are not safe either.  If you have a two-story or shorter chimney, it is highly recommended to have a chimney cap installed.  Raccoons will have babies on the shelf above the flu of a chimney that they can access.

Mating takes place around February.  Birth generally takes place in mid April to early May.  Average litter size is 3 but they can have as many as 6.  The young will stay with mom for several months.  Raccoon families have been known to stay in their chosen nesting site until as late as September.  They are less of a nuisance in homes through the Fall and Winter months, but will take advantage of a warm attic on cold nights.

Raccoon populations in the urban environment have been growing faster than they would in the wild.  This is largely due to the never-ending food source.  A large population in a small setting is a good recipe for disease as well as a much more aggressive behavior.  These animals are no longer fearful of humans and are known to attack small animals.
It is highly recommended that you seek the help of a professional Wildlife Control Operator when trying to eliminate a nuisance raccoon problem.
