SQUIRRELS
Oregon is home to several types of squirrels. The most common being the Eastern Grey and the Eastern Fox squirrels, neither of which are indigenous to this area. Over the years, animals have been introduced into new regions in various ways. Some were brought as pets and then released, some were brought for their pelts (fur) and some were brought by accident on ships and delivery vehicles. These non-native species have become quite invasive and are the most common trouble makers.
In the Spring and in the Fall, squirrels begin to enter homes to build their nest in preparation for raising a family. They can be very noisy and very destructive. Like rodents, they chew on things. They chew a lot. They chew through wood, they chew through gutters and other flashing, but more importantly, they chew through wires. It is unknown how many house fires are caused by rodents and squirrels, but it is estimated high enough to be a concern to any homeowner.
It is important when you have a family of squirrels in your home that you take the proper steps to eliminate them. They are very difficult to “lock out”. A trapping program is recommended before any permanent repairs are done. If you have a problem with squirrels in your home, it is recommended that you seek the help of a professional Wildlife Control Operator.
